Interagency Working Group on Manufacturing Research and Development

In support of the President’s Manufacturing Initiative, the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) created an Interagency Working Group (IWG) on Manufacturing Research and Development (R&D) to identify and integrate R&D requirements and develop strategies for the Federal Government's manufacturing R&D programs.

The IWG, led by the Department of Commerce, works to coordinate and leverage current Federal efforts on manufacturability issues such as – Image of sprockets

  • Low-cost, high-volume manufacturing systems
  • Advanced manufacturing technologies
  • Manufacturing infrastructure
  • Measurements and standards

The coordinated, multi-agency group focuses on three technical topic priorities

  • Nanomanufacturing - the construction and use of functional structures designed from atomic or molecular scale with at least one characteristic dimension measured in nanometers
  • Intelligent & Integrated Manufacturing
  • Manufacturing for the Hydrogen Economy

Manufacturing R&D for the Hydrogen Economy is led by the Department of Energy (DOE). This effort complements the technology development efforts now underway through the President’s Hydrogen Fuel Initiative (HFI). To support the development and expanded use of hydrogen technologies, manufacturing R&D must set in place the manufacturing processes and supplier chains necessary for market introduction and economic growth. The Roadmap on Manufacturing R&D for the Hydrogen Economy identifies critical challenges facing the manufacture of hydrogen systems today, with a focus on fuel cell and hydrogen production, delivery, and storage technologies. The Roadmap is based on results from a workshop led by DOE, supported by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and coordinated with IWG that involved hydrogen experts from the Federal government, universities, national laboratories, and industry.
